91st Division Soldiers who have passed
CW4 (R) Dan Cherrick passed away on September 13, 2026. For 40 years, Dan served our nation through the United States Army and Army Reserve. His career included six years as an enlisted soldier followed by 34 years in the U.S. Army Reserve as a military technician, serving in the dual role of soldier and Army civilian. He retired in 2000 as a Chief Warrant Officer 4 (CW4) and at the civilian grade of GS-12. The final 18 years of Dan’s distinguished career were spent with the 91st Division at Fort Baker, where many members of our League came to know and respect him. His quiet leadership, kindness, humility, professionalism, and willingness to mentor others left a lasting impression on generations of soldiers and civilians associated with the 91st.
MG (R) Thomas Murchie passed away on September, 2026. MG Murchie served as Commanding General of the 91st Division (Exercise) from August 1993 to August 1997. His distinguished military service was complemented by a highly successful civilian career as a technology executive during the early years of the Silicon Valley technological revolution.
CPT Westford Ramos (Ray) Latimer passed away June 24, 2026. Ray came to California after his active duty and joined the Army Reserves in Stockton in the early 60’s. He was an integral part of the success of the Lathrop USAR, acting as S3 NCOIC for many successful officers from that unit to include MG Roger Brautigan and BG Bruce Adam’s. (obit)
Harold Russell Horner passed away on April 30, 2026. Harold joined the United States (US) Navy serving from 1951 to 1955; stationed on the USS Stockham destroyer off Okinawa, Japan during the Korean War. After active duty, he served in the US Navy Reserve and later the US Army Reserve until retiring in 1994 after 40 years at the age of 60. (obit)
MSG(R) Rosalind Jordan passed away May 24, 2026. Rosalind was an AGR soldier who served in the 91st Division G-1. Rosalind passed away after a 7-year battle with Alzheimer’s. Services will be held on June 9th. (obit)
SGT Jan Cayot – 26 Jan 2026 – Jan served in the 91st at the Presidio SF. He was a Retired Senior Engineer at Lockheed Missile and Space Company. His father and his uncle also served with the 91st Division. Although Jan did not attend League events, he was a longtime supporter of the League thru his annual donations. Jan’s family were early settlers of California. He was buried at the La Porte Cemetery, La Porte, Plumas County, California. (Photo)

MG (R) Fred Lawson – January 23, 2025. He enlisted in the Army, serving with honor and distinction during World War II and continuing through the subsequent conflict in Korea. As he rose through the military ranks, Fred attained the distinguished rank of 2-Star Major General in the Army Reserves, showcasing his exceptional leadership abilities, dedication to service, and commitment to his country. His contributions included significant roles in logistical operations and engineering projects that shaped military strategy and public service efforts for years to come.

COL Ret. Joseph Piasta II – passed away in his Santa Rosa home on July 19, 2024, surrounded by his children, at the age of 73, following a harrowing and heroically fought battle against cancer. (Photo and obit)

BG (R) James Combs – 2021. Brigadier General James P. Combs of Vacaville, California, passed away in 2021. A Vietnam veteran, he began his Army career as an enlisted soldier in 1967 and received his commission in the California Army National Guard in 1971.His service included assignment in 2001 as Assistant Division Commander (ARNG), 91st Division (Training Support). Following retirement, he continued supporting soldiers, veterans, and military families.
